I have nothing but happy memories about making 'Death by Chocolate'. It was by far the least stressful film I've made yet. It was a really relaxed atmosphere on set, everyone had a fun time making the film and I think that comes across on screen.

Mike Haynes, who plays Dave was great to work with; I couldn't have given the part to a better actor, he was perfect. Lots of good fun on set. Such as the scene where I had to pour chocolate syrup over Mike's face, who was lying semi-naked in a bath! Good sport. Mike also had to do lots of running around for the chase sequence - I think he lost a few pounds in weight at the end of the shoot!

throughout that whole scene!

Props must also go to Sue Kimberley, who makes a memorable appearance as the nasty neighbour. I would work with Sue again in 'The Boy with a Thorn in His Side' in which she puts across more of her comedic talent. I think the main reason the film works is because Mike has great comic timing. He underplayed the part of Dave instead of going over the top and that works well.

'Death by Chocolate' has probably been the most successful short film that I've made. It's played at two festivals and won an audience award at the Mac Theatre in Birmingham, for an event called 'Screen Test'.
At the time of writing the script I wanted to make something funny and light-hearted and I know I succeeded in that aspect. The comedy works well in the film; there's one laugh out loud moment after another and it's quite a short short film as well. It doesn't outstay it's welcome and I think it's quite memorable. It has a universal theme - nearly everyone loves chocolate and can relate to Dave's dilemma.

I have never bought so much chocolate in my life! There's a story behind the opening scene where Mike is eating all that chocolate. I had laid out the chocolate overnight on the table the day before shooting, and when it came to shoot the scene the next day all the chocolate had gone off! So all that chocolate Mike eats must have tasted vile! There was also a chocolate éclair that Mike took a bite of - of course the cream inside had gone stale so Mike was on the verge of puking
