Andre can't sleep. He can't dream. He never recalls any dreams ever. This bothers him. This drives him to obsession. Or compulsion, as his girlfriend Diane refers to it. They have problems. Andre's working hours means they hardly see each other. She's worried about him, about his lack of sleep, lack of dreams, and lack of life. They are drifting further apart.
Andre lives two vastly different lives. During the day, he's a depressed insomniac postal worker. He's an inquisitive soul - pondering life's mysteries during his postal bike rides, always bothering his co-postal workers at the sorting depot with questions about the meaning of dreams, the purpose of sleep.
Another obsession with Andre is 4:44. This is the time he saw on his alarm clock after his last good night's sleep. And now the number is everywhere. It's following him. It's a sign. A symbol. But for what? Andre sees other things as well. Not quite visions or hallucinations, but things that other people don't notice. Things that can only be seen at night. Because when everyone else is sleeping, that's when Andre truly comes into his own.
It all started during one of Andre's late night bike rides. Unable to sleep, Andre spends the dead hours of the night riding the city streets on his bike. This is when he sees things. And this was when Andre met Joe X; a mysterious alien grey/human hybrid who has an offer for Andre which he can't refuse.
Joe wants to recruit him for the DDD (Department of Dream Defence) - a secret task force that ensures the good unsuspecting people of this world are given the right dreams at the right time. Andre's seemingly dull life suddenly starts to turn into a magical existence during the dead night hours, when he takes on an altogether different existence.
During these dark hours, Andre becomes the Dream Courier.
Andre's job becomes more personal with each case - first it's Diane he must administer dreams to, and then, unbelievably, his final sleeper case is himself. When confronting 'Joe X' about how this can be possible, the penny finally drops for Andre - his night time exploits have all been just a series of dreams - wild, colourful, amazing dreams.
Now Andre is fully awake and aware in his own dream, and must hunt down his own sleeping self in the real world if he's ever going to wake up to reality again.
